Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi’s are two distinct breeds of Corgi. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has been traced as far back s 1100 AD and are thought to have descended from breeds such as the Siberian Husky. The word Corgi translates from Welsh to “dwarf dog”. The dogs were initially bred to herd sheep , goats and other livestock. Legend has it that Corgi’s were the enchanted dogs of elves in Wales and were ridden into battle by the mystical little people! Corgis are achondroplastic-which means they are a true dwarf breed and one of the smallest herding dogs in the world.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is the older of the two corgi breeds.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi – has a tail and pointy ears-breed standard colors are red, sable,brindle,black and blue merle-white flashings on the chest, neck or undersides-white is NOT a breed standard color


Pembroke Welsh Corgi-no tail (usually docked) and rounded ears-breed standard colors are red, sable, fawn, black and tan with or without white markings-white and blue merle coats are NOT considered breed standard

Corgi Dog Breed Temperament

The Corgi is generally a high energy dog that requires daily exercise. The are considered an affectionate dog breed that wants to please their owner and be at their side. Their build, short legs and a long back, do not make them well suited for jumping, as excessive jumping can cause spinal fractures. Corgi’s are great with children as they are intelligent and easy going. They can have a stubborn streak but asserting yourself as the alpha can go a long way in helping reduce some of that stubbornness!


Corgi Dog Breed Training

Corgi’s are intelligent dogs that are generally easy to train. Food is a great motivator for Corgi’s-but they may have a tendency to overeat-don’t overdo it! Crate training is recommended as Corgi’s want to be in the action and tend to bark at almost anything. They may instinctively nip at the heels of children and may need to be trained not to do so.


Corgi Dog Breed Health and Care

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi sheds daily and may have even more severe shedding at certain times of the year. They will need to be brushed and groomed!

  • Hip dysplasia is a common health concern among Corgi’s
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy is an eye condition that may result in blindness
  • Degenerative Myelopathy-serious nerve and spine condition that effects Corgi’s-there is no treatment for this condition
  • Corgi’s are known to become overweight very easily-monitor your dog’s weight
