Brussels Griffons are known for their big personalities. They are intelligent, curious, and affectionate dogs that form strong bonds with their owners. They can be a bit stubborn at times but are generally friendly, alert, and full of energy. They make great companions and thrive on human interaction.
Brussels Griffons are a toy sized
dogs that can trace their origins back to Brussels, Belgium in the early 1800s. These little dogs were originally bred for a very specific purpose – to hunt and kill rats in stables and horse-drawn cabs. Despite their small size, Brussels Griffons were known for their tenacity and fearlessness when it came to going after rodents. Over time, they became beloved companions and lapdogs, thanks to their charming personalities and adorable appearance.
Towards the end of the 1800’s
the Affenpinscher, Pug and English Toy Spaniel were bred into the Brussels Griffon, giving them that almost human expression we see today. This distinctive feature is one of the most recognizable traits of the Brussels Griffon and adds to their undeniable charm. The deliberate combination of these breeds not only created a visually appealing dog but also brought together different temperaments and characteristics, resulting in a breed that is playful, affectionate, and full of personality.
Brussels Griffon were very popular
during the 1920’s when they attended shows with their owners, who would walk them down the isles of theaters-showing them off. It was also common for these little dogs to perform in the circus. They would ride bicycles, roller skate, and even stand on their hind legs!
The Brussels Griffon, Petit Brabançon, Griffon Belge
are three varieties of the Brussels Griffon. The can all reach a height of about 10 inches and weigh up to 10 pounds. The Brussels Griffon and the Griffon Belge are rough coated while the Griffon Belge has a smooth coat.
According to FCI Breed Standard
the differences in the coat colors for the 3 varieties are the following:
Brussels Griffon: Red, reddish brown; a little black is allowed on the head furnishing
Griffon Belge: Solid Black, black and tan. The tan markings must be pure and of a sustained colour
Petit Brabançon: The same colours are accepted as for the Griffons. It has a dark mask.
Star Wars and the Brussels Griffon
In the movie Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, the adorable Ewoks were actually based on the Brussels Griffon. The filmmakers used a Brussels Griffon named Rowe as a reference for creating these iconic characters. With their fluffy fur, expressive faces, and small stature, it’s easy to see why they served as the inspiration for the lovable Ewoks. Not only did they make their mark in the Star Wars universe, but they also influenced some of the Muppets characters, further solidifying their place in pop culture history.
Brussels Griffon are
known for their high energy levels and playful nature. While they are not excessively “yappy,” they do have a tendency to bark when they are engaged in play or feeling excited. These little dogs also have a mischievous side to their personality, which can add an extra dose of fun to your day. However, their stubborn streak can make training a bit of a challenge. Patience and consistency are key when it comes to teaching them new commands and behaviors.

entitled, “The Intelligence of Dogs”, professor Stanley Coren researched and documented the intelligence of over 130 different dog breeds. In his book, the Brussels Griffon ranks 59th out of 130 breeds in working/obedience intelligence. Essentially this means they will learn new commands in 40 to 80 repetitions and obey first commands more than 30% of the time. This puts them in the “fair working and obedience intelligence” category. In contrast, the most intelligent breeds will learn the same commands in 5 repetitions or less!

With their wiry coats and bearded faces, Brussels Griffons are easily recognizable. These velcro dogs thrive on companionship and love being by their owner’s side. However, it is important to remember that they are a sensitive breed and may require extra socialization to feel comfortable in new situations. Weekly brushing is necessary to maintain their rough coats, and occasional baths can keep them looking their best. Due to their short snouts, Brussels Griffons may be prone to respiratory problems and should be monitored closely during exercise or hot weather. Despite these challenges, Brussels Griffon puppies will generally grow into happy dogs with a playful energy that will do well in agility training, learning new tricks or just a daily walk. With proper care and socialization, these wonderful, bearded dogs can bring immense joy and love to their owners’ lives.
