1. The Boston terrier dog was originally bred in the mid-1800s in Boston, Massachusetts by crossing an English bulldog with a white English terrier. They were originally called Round Head Bull Terriers. Today, the Boston terrier is often referred to as “the American gentleman.”

2. Boston Terriers were first recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1893. They remain a popular breed today and are often cited for their human-like expressions, playful personalities, affectionate natures, and charm.

3. The Boston Terrier is an intelligent, affectionate breed. Active, alert and gregarious are all words used to describe this breed. They are well known for their “Boston swagger” which is not aggression but self-confidence.

4. Boston Terriers tend to have a hyper-active personality which can come across as being high energy or active without being able to sit still. In research from the University of Pennsylvania, the breed ranked number 14 out of 124 dog breeds in excitability!

5. In American Kennel Club (AKC) running competitions, the Boston Terrier had a average running speed of 21.2 mph while the fastest Boston was timed at 27.01 mph!


6. According to the AKC, the Boston Terrier grows up to 17 inches tall and 25 pounds. Their life expectancy is 11-13 years. Breed standard colors are brindle, seal, or black with white markings.

7. While research has shown that Boston Terriers have very low aggression scores towards humans, they rank high in aggression towards other dogs and can be very competitive with other dogs.

8. Despite their names, Boston Terriers are not considered a terrier breed by the AKC. They are in the non-sporting group.

9. Unfortunately, the Boston Terriers eyes are fairly prone to eye injury because of their large size and prominence. There are more than 20 different eye diseases that can affect Bostons.

10. Being a brachycephalic breed, (flat faces and short muzzle) Boston terriers tend to “swallow” a lot of air. And, as you know what goes in, must come out. A gassy Boston can clear a room in no time! They also may snort, snore and make some unique sounds.
